Rethinking Video Transport

Abstract:

In this talk we briefly introduce some challenges and new ideas related to supporting the substantial increases in video traffic that broadband wireless networks are expected to support in the next decades. Our focus will be on exhibiting new network transport techniques that exploit critical aspects of human perception and video watching behaviours, as well as the characteristics of the wireless medium to deliver real gains in system capacity and/or the quality of experience of users. To that end we leverage ideas from opportunistic scheduling and network utility maximization that we expect can play a key role in fully exploiting the resources available in such systems.
