Media landscape in Twitter: A world of new conventions and political diversity

Abstract

In this talk, I will present work by my student and collaborators at MPI and KAIST about the analysis of the evolution of the set of relationships between sources, retweets, mentions and followers, in the context of the position and evolution of the political spectrum of views expressed in those sources and inferred about those participants in twitter. The two main messages from the work are that one can understand an enourmous amount about viewpoints simply by looking at the structure of the social network (without even considering content e.g by sentiment analysis or other NLP techniques), and that social networks seem to be a force for increasing diversity of views.
