Communication as the foundation of the smart grid

Thomas Hillman (Marketing Manager at Texas Instruments)

Abstract

The basis for the transformation from today's electricity grid to the smart grid of tommorow is communication between energy supply points and switching, storing and consumption points in the grid. This communcation can be devided into 3 mayor domains : (1) communciation from your home to the utility (e.g. meter data via LV grid PLC ) (2) in house communication (meter to meter/MUC or smart appliances on PLC, wireless M-Bus or Zigbee) and last but not least (3) electic vehicle to grid communication . The basis for a large scale deployment of the communication technologies is the definition of common standards, so that every device on the grid speak the same language. While there are several initiatives on the way for standardisation, this talk will look at the most promising candiates from a semiconductor company point of view given the conflicting constrains on timelines, speed, robustness, privacy and quality that players in this markt face today.
