The Next Disruptive Network Technology
by Nick Maxemchuk (Columbia University, USA and Institute IMDEA Networks, Spain)
Abstract:
There is always a next generation communications network, but approximately every 50 years there has been a new technology that changes the way we communicate. About 100 years ago the circuit switching technology, that was the basis of the telephone network, displaced the dedicated transmission lines of the telegraph networks, and about 50 years ago the connectionless, packet switching technology of the Internet displaced the telephone network. There were many generations of telephone switches starting with operator patch panels and ending with ATM switches.
The change from to the next technology was so complete that ATM switches were never fully deployed.
What technology will replace the Internet? During this presentation I will review some pent up technologies that have been researched, but do not fit well into the Internet model, and several services that may be more easily supported with these technologies. Based on the technologies and services I will predict the network that will replace the next generation Internet.
