Energy Efficiency versus Quality of Experience in wireless networks: From measurements to trade-off analysis
Abstract
Dealing with energy efficiency typically points at savings in one or the other way. Saving communication resources is typically associated with compromises regarding communication quality. On this background, the tutorial focuses on (and somehow question) needs for trading off between energy efficiency and Quality of Experience (QoE). To this end, we will address energy efficiency metrics in wireless networks on the one hand, and identify the views of users upon energy consumption in the context of Quality of Experience on the other hand. Recent hardware-based high-resolution measurements for different popular applications on mobile devices, such as mobile video streaming with/-out a-priory download, will be discussed. Based on the latter results, we will show that better QoE may well come along with lower energy consumption. Furthermore, we will reveal evidence of QoE problems seen from energy measurements.
Instructors
Tuan Anh Trinh: received his Ph.D. in Computer Science from the Budapest University of Technology and Economics (BME). He then founded and is the Head of the Network Economics Group at BME. His recent research interests include energy efficiency of large scale distributed systems, energy efficient data centre design, economics-inspired system design, and sustainability issues of the Future Internet. He is involved in the COST Action IC0804 as Co-chair of the working group "Characterization of performance-energy saving trade-off", and in the FP7 IP EARTH project which deals with energy efficiency of future wireless networks as well as other national projects in the field of energy efficient networking and smart grids. He is a co-guest editor of the Special Issue on Energy Efficiency in Large Scale Distributed Systems in Future Generation Computer System journal and the Special Issue on Socio-Economic Aspects of Next Generation Networks in Telecommunications Systems journal. He is a member of the Program Committee of a number of international conferences related to energy efficient networking, including the ACM SIGCOMM E-Energy Conference, IEEE INFOCOM Workshop on Green Networking and Smart Grids. He has been involved Program Committee and co-organized the “Economics of Privacy” session in the Future Internet Assembly in Budapest. He has been invited as a visiting scientist at Ericsson Research Budapest (Hungary), British Telecom (UK), Viettel Corporation (Vietnam), Eurecom Institute (France), University of Luxembourg (Luxembourg), among others. He is a professional member of the ACM and an affiliate of the IEEE Computer Society. His Erdős number is 3. Markus Fiedler: is holding a Ph.D. degree in Electrical Engineering with focus on ICT and a Docent degree in Telecommunication Systems. He is holding the position of a full professor in teletraffic systems at Blekinge Institute of Technology (BTH), School of Computing (COM), where he is heading the Communication and Computer Systems Research Laboratory. Starting from modelling and analysis of traffic in telecommunication and computer networks, he has been focusing on Quality of Experience (QoE) during the recent years. His interests and experience include amongst others performance evaluation, user perception of waiting times, QoE models, security, instrumented user interfaces and recently energy measurements. He is member of the Steering Board of the NoE Euro-NF and in charge of its Specific Joint Research Projects. At the Future Internet Assembly (FIA) in Budapest in May 2011, he co-organised a Future Internet Cluster Workshop and a FIA session on "ICT and Sustainability". He is also involved in the COST Action IC0804. He is Future Internet Cluster Co-Chair in the ICT domain of the EC, and is serving on the editorial board of the Transactions on Emerging Telecommunications Technologies (ETT).
